Submission Types and Word Limits


EAD27 welcomes submissions in seven categories, reflecting our commitment to diverse forms of knowledge production. Authors must select the appropriate format upon submission. The word counts below are inclusive of references unless otherwise stated.


Submission Types


  • Full Research Papers*:
  • 4,000 – 6,000 words Mature and substantial research contributions.


  • Position Papers*:
  • 1,500 – 2,000 words Emerging arguments, theoretical provocations, or early-stage research.


  • Pictoral / Visual Essays
  • 1,000 – 2,000 words equiv. Integrated visual material as a core epistemic component.


  • Practice-Based Research Papers:
  • 2,000 – 3,000 words Documentation of practice and critical reflection.


  • Workshops:
  • 1,500 – 2,000 word proposal Objectives, format, duration (90–180 min), participants, expected outcomes.


  • Doctoral Colloquium:
  • 2,000 – 3,000 words Open to PhD candidates seeking feedback from senior researchers.


  • Exhibition Proposals:
  • 1,000 – 1,500 words + Visuals Installations, artefacts, prototypes aligned with the theme.


Note: Word counts are inclusive of abstract and references, but exclusive of figure captions, tables, and appendices. Authors of Pictorials and Exhibition Proposals should ensure visual material is of sufficient resolution for review (minimum 150 dpi at print size).


Language


All submissions must be written in English. Authors are strongly encouraged to ensure that their texts are clear, accurate, and professionally presented. The use of language assistance tools, including AI-based systems, is permitted solely for improving grammar, clarity, and text organization. These tools must not be used to generate substantive content, original ideas, or the main body of the paper. Authors should indicate if AI-assisted editing was used.


Manuscript Formatting


General Requirements


File format: Microsoft Word (.docx) or PDF for initial submission; final accepted versions must be submitted as .docx.

Page size: A4.

Margins: 2.5 cm on all sides.

Line spacing: 1.5 for body text.

Font: Times New Roman, 12pt for body text.

Paragraph spacing: 6pt after each paragraph; do not indent the first line.

All pages must be numbered.


Title and Author Information


For blind review, author information must not appear in the submitted manuscript. Author details (name, affiliation, email, ORCID) are entered separately in the submission platform.

Title: centred, bold, 14pt, maximum 15 words.

Abstract: 200–250 words, immediately below the title. The abstract should state the research question or objective, methodology, main findings, and significance.

Keywords: 4–6 keywords, listed below the abstract, separated by semicolons.


Headings


Use a maximum of three heading levels.

Heading 1: bold, 12pt, numbered (e.g., 1. Introduction).

Heading 2: bold, 11pt, numbered (e.g., 1.1 Context).

Heading 3: italic, 11pt, unnumbered.


Figures and Tables


All figures and tables must be embedded in the text and numbered sequentially (Figure 1, Table 1).

Captions should appear below figures and above tables.

Images must be a minimum of 300 dpi at the intended print size.

Authors are responsible for obtaining copyright permissions for all third-party visual material.

For Pictorials and Visual Essays, images are considered primary content and should be embedded at full resolution.


Quotations


Short quotations (fewer than 40 words): included in the body text, within double quotation marks.

Long quotations (40 words or more): presented as an indented block, without quotation marks, in 11pt.


References and Citations


EAD27 uses the APA 7th edition referencing style. Authors are responsible for the accuracy and completeness of all references.


In-text Citations


Author–date format: (Smith, 2021) or Smith (2021) for narrative citations.

Direct quotations must include page number: (Smith, 2021, p. 45).

For works with three or more authors, use 'et al.' from the first citation: (Smith et al., 2020).


Reference List


The reference list should appear at the end of the paper, under the heading 'References', formatted according to APA 7th edition. Examples:

Book: Smith, J., & Jones, R. (2020). Design and trust: A critical perspective. Publisher.

Journal article: Brown, A. (2022). Transparency and design in platform economies. Design Studies, 45(3), 112–130. https://doi.org/xxxxx

Conference paper: Silva, M. (2023). Co-design and relational ethics. In Proceedings of EAD15 (pp. 88–99). Publisher.

Self-citations must be anonymised for blind review (e.g., Author, 2022 [reference withheld for review]).


Anonymisation for Blind Review


EAD27 operates a double-blind peer review process. All submissions must be thoroughly anonymised before upload. Authors must:

Remove their names, affiliations, and acknowledgements from the manuscript.

Anonymise self-references in the text (e.g., 'as argued in [Author, 2022]').

Remove identifying metadata from the file (check Document Properties before submitting).

Not include the project title or grant number if it directly identifies the authors.


Submissions that are not properly anonymised will be returned to the authors for correction and may miss the review cycle.

EAD27's double-blind peer review process is conducted by the Track Chairs.

Ethical Standards and Originality


By submitting to EAD27, authors confirm that:

The work is original and has not been published, nor is it under review elsewhere.

All co-authors have approved the submission.

Human participant research has received appropriate ethical clearance.

AI-generated text has been disclosed and the authors take full responsibility for the intellectual content of the paper.

Copyright for third-party images, figures, or other materials has been obtained.


Plagiarism, including self-plagiarism, will result in rejection. The conference reserves the right to contact authors' institutions in cases of suspected misconduct.

Authors should indicate the most relevant track upon submission. Track assignment is subject to editorial review and may be adjusted during the process.

Exact submission dates will be confirmed upon activation of the submission platform. Authors are encouraged to register their interest via the EAD27 website to receive updates.


Submission Procedure


All submissions must be made through the official Conference's online submission platform (Microsoft CMT).


Authors must create a Microsoft CMT account and complete all required metadata fields, including abstract, keywords, track selection, and author details.

The manuscript must be uploaded as a single anonymised file (.docx or .pdf).

For Pictorials and Exhibition Proposals, supplementary visual files may be uploaded separately.

Authors will receive an automated acknowledgement of receipt. If no confirmation is received within 48 hours, contact the conference organisers.

Revised versions, following reviewer feedback, must be submitted by the deadline indicated in the notification of acceptance.
